The fabulous tapestry of multicoloured, etched marble on Siena’s cathedral floor stretches right up to its main altar. According to popular belief, it was first conceived by Duccio di Buoninsegna. Its sumptuousness is without rival. It covers the entire surface of the cathedral with 52 rectangular depictions in etched, coloured marble.

Santa Maria della Scala

Costruito di fronte alla scalinata del Duomo, da cui il nome Santa Maria della Scala, fin dalla fine del I° millennio, ha accolto i pellegrini che percorrevano la via Francigena e ha aiutato i poveri ed i bambini abbandonati. Nei secoli ha poi ampliato le proprie funzioni assistenziali trasformandosi in un moderno ospedale. Solo dal 1997 è divenuto un importante museo e polo culturale.

The University for Foreigners

In 1992 the University of Siena was joined by another institution, the University for Foreigners, which was created through a special law. This university carries on Siena’s long tradition of courses for foreigners, which were the first to be offered in Italy.

The University of Siena

The Universitas Scholarium was already operating in 1240. With the decree issued by Charles V of Luxembourg, Siena’s university proper was born in 1357. Judith Hook wrote that in the 15th century, “Its reputation was unsurpassed in Europe, especially in the fields of medicine and law”.
