Where Art lives

The eyes stare into nowhere and you become one with the particular features offered by this unique land, where art rules every time and every place. Children will have the opportunity to get acquainted with artistic activities dedicated especially to them.

The art of children

A journey with your children through the Terre di Siena to the discovery of antique paintings – with itineraries dedicated entirely to them – as a cognitive instrument of an era, a trade or a territory, stretching as far as an approach to the language of contemporary art, can become a fantastic means to experience extraordinary encounters with their imagination and the world of art.

Complesso Museale SMS Siena

The immense complex of Santa Maria della Scala, one of the first European examples of a hospital, having completed its health functions, is undergoing meticulous restoration and recovery. The Foundation has numerous museums:

- SMS Archaeology: housed in the atmospheric underground rooms and split into two sections: the Antiquarium, which comprises various private collections (Bonci Casuccini, Bargagli Petrucci, Chigi Zondadari, Mieli, Accademia dei Fisiocritici) and the Topographic section, which illustrates the main aspects of the Sienese territory;

- SMS Art Museum for Children: the main mission of which is to bring the world of childhood towards art and artistic culture, through direct contact with the work of art. The collection is made up of objects owned by the museum, donations and loans, and offers inspiration for the teaching activities;

- SMS Contemporary: the contemporary art centre of Siena which, in a climate of dialogue and confrontation with history and the territory, houses and holds personal and collective shows, projects, events and initiatives aimed at enhancing and divulging the main Italian and international artistic trends of recent years.

SMS Santa Maria della Scala also houses the Library and Photo Library Briganti, the Centro Europeo per la Ricerca e il Restauro (CERR) (European Centre for Research and Restoration) and numerous spaces (about 6,000 square metres) destined to temporary exhibitions and conventions.

Siena OPA…

Siena OPA

Cathedral, Museum of the Opera, Crypt, Baptistery, Oratory of St. Bernardino.

The Opera della Metropolitana, Vestry-board of the Cathedral of Siena, formerly the Magistracy of the Antique Sienese State, administers the historical monumental artistic heritage of the Cathedral.

A discovery of treasures with an incredibly atmospheric effect for children.

The Duomo Cathedral of Siena represents one of the finest artistic expressions of the late medieval period in Italy. The most particular element of the Cathedral is the floor, which is unique in its kind. To protect it against wear and tear, it remains covered for most of the year and is displayed between the end of August and the end of October every year owing to 'the unveiled floor' initiative.

The Museo dell’Opera houses Italian masterpieces, such as the remarkable "Maestà" by Duccio di Buoninsegna and the outstanding collection of marble sculptures by Giovanni Pisano.

The Crypt was an astounding discovery made in 1999, during the renovation works. A room measuring 180 square metres, decorated with frescoes dating back to the 1200’s, with its colours intact and the original subjects.

The Baptistery lies beneath the choir of the Cathedral frescoed by Vecchietta, Pietro degli Orioli and Benvenuto di Giovanni.

The Oratory of St. Bernardino offers an overview of the pictorial production of the Sienese artists starting from the 14th century.

Pinacoteca Nazionale Siena…

Pinacoteca Nazionale Siena

The chance to closely examine extraordinary works of art doesn't come along often. A visit to the Pinacoteca Nazionale will let you study the styles, subjects and messages that have been forever fixed in paint, whether on wooden boards or large canvasses: all together they form an extraordinary collection of famous artists, from the great master Duccio di Buoninsegna to Domenico Beccafumi.

Resting your gaze on the pictures may also cause you to reflect on the symbolic universe as reconstructed by man and let you see how they changed in relation to one another with the passage of time.

A painting by the great Simone Martini, or Ambrogio or Pietro Lorenzetti, acts as a time-machine, taking us back to an age where things "divine" were considered so elevated that to approach or represent them required the most precious of materials only.

Sienese Art is descended from the great traditions of Byzantine Art but renewed and "personalised". All the gold used demonstrates the great respect that, in the Middle Ages, was inspired by the"divine Spirit" but with profoundly softened features.

But, at times, it is hard to recognise the subjects and symbols and to understand the relationships between them without someone to explain it all.
For this reason, the Siena Pinacoteca provides an itinerary for young visitors that helps them to learn about the subjects represented in this prestigious collection.
It's a visual and informative process that will help them to gain some familiarity with the history of art.
